Hi Rachel,
Thanks for starting a post about Xero. I am also thinking of using it for my bookkeeping (spare parts business using Excel. I have availed of the trial of Xero and I am quite apprehensive since I don't have any background in accounting. I tried entering invoices for my sales and inventory, but I am lost now as to how I will tie up my paypal and bank accounts in order to generate my cashflow. Do you have any advice for me on how I will be able to get along comfortably with Xero? I will appreciate very much your advice.

Thanks for the writeup of Xero. We've just discovered it too and are evaluating it at the moment.

We moved from QuickBooks to KashFlow initially - which was a definite improvement, but a new multi-currency requirement has made us look around again.

Xero seems to be the best fit so far. Hopefully, we'll get on with the API and all will be well ..

Great post Rachael. Just a quick update point, since you did your conversion to Xero they have now added the ability to import sales and purchase invoices, not just the contact (which was all that was available when we did our conversion too).

I have just setup a Xero Users Online Community at www.xerousers.com. It would be great if you wanted to join and could maybe copy this blog posting into your blog at Xero Users.

Best wishes,

Adrian Pearson

The API is pretty straightforward. There were no PHP samples but the docs are fine. We discovered a couple of things regarding VAT that weren't clear but the support team at Xero helped us out quickly.

One thing to be aware of in the UK is that as Xero are based in New Zealand we were having to wait overnight sometimes to get answers, but as long as you aren't trying to do things in a crazy rush that isn't a problem.

They have a sandbox for testing and once you are ready to go you have to have your usage of the API verified by Xero. They wanted to see 20 or so correct transactions before they would verify us and allow us to use the live server. This was helpful though as it meant we were sure everything was being created correctly and I've not had any problems with the data that is coming into our live account now we are live with the API.

Hi Rachel. Thanks for the excellent write up. We're in a similar position, Jo uses Quickbooks on a creaky old PC in the office but I'd love to get rid of that and have her use her Mac for the accounts.

How did you find the documentation on the API? I'd love to see a write up on that... :)
